Lawn Topdressing

If your lawn stays thin no matter how often it gets fed, the problem may be the soil it's growing in. Lawn topdressing spreads a thin layer of carefully selected organic material across your lawn to add organic matter, improve soil structure and give roots a better place to live. It's one of our lawn care services aimed at the soil itself, and it's often the next step after a soil test shows what's missing.

What Is Lawn Topdressing?

Topdressing means applying a thin layer of soil amendment over the lawn you already have. Our top dressing service uses a custom blend of 100% organic matter made for Louisiana soils: a seven-year aged compost that is black, rich and full of what your lawn wants and needs. It isn't a fertilizer you put down and forget about. It's a long-term improvement to the environment around your grass's roots.

How Compost Top Dressing Helps Your Lawn

More Organic Matter

Organic matter helps soil hold moisture and nutrients and supports the biological activity below the surface.

Better Soil Structure

It opens up pore space in compacted soil, so water and air can move through and roots can grow deeper.

Better Drainage

Improved soil absorbs and drains water better, which lowers the risk of waterlogged turf and fungal disease.

Fewer Weeds Over Time

A dense, healthy lawn leaves weeds less room to get started.

Less Drought Stress

A better soil profile builds root mass, so the lawn handles heat and dry spells like the 2023 drought better.

Help for High-pH Soil

With the right material, topdressing can be part of a longer-term plan for improving high-pH soil.

New Construction Lawns Need It Most

New-construction lots are often left with very little good soil. Builders commonly strip the topsoil, bring in fill like river silt, and run heavy machines across the property before the grass ever goes down. The lawn looks great at first. Then, within the first 12 months, many of these lawns start to decline.

When we test them, we frequently find the same three problems: high pH, low organic matter and compacted soil. Adding more fertilizer won't fix any of them. Adding better soil can, and that's exactly what topdressing does, a thin layer at a time, without tearing out the lawn you have.

Topdressing Starts With a Soil Test

We usually recommend topdressing after a soil test shows low organic matter, poor soil structure or high pH. Testing first means we're fixing a problem we can measure instead of guessing. If you're on our 7 Step Annual Lawn Treatment Program, that test is already part of your first visit, so the conversation about topdressing comes with real numbers behind it.

Topdressing and Core Aeration: Two Ways to Build Better Soil

Topdressing and core aeration are two separate soil-building services that complement each other. Aeration relieves compaction by pulling small plugs of soil out of the lawn, and topdressing adds organic matter with our organic blend. Each one helps on its own, and they don't have to happen in a set order. We schedule them around your lawn, your soil test and the season.

Is Topdressing the Same as Lawn Leveling?

Not quite, and it's a fair question. Our topdressing goes down as a thin layer, and its job is to improve the soil, not to regrade your landscape. If bumps or low spots are what's bugging you, mention them when you reach out, and we'll tell you honestly whether topdressing is the right fit.

It Takes Time, and That's the Point

Topdressing isn't an overnight fix. Improving poor soil takes time. But that's the point: we're improving the soil your lawn will be growing in for years, not chasing a temporary green-up. Consistent topdressing over time keeps building on itself, so your lawn gets healthier and more resilient season after season.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call (225) 405-1816.

What is lawn topdressing?

A thin layer of organic material spread across your existing lawn to add organic matter and improve the soil your grass grows in.

What material do you use?

A custom blend of 100% organic matter made for Louisiana soils. It's a seven-year aged compost: black, rich and finely screened.

How often should I topdress?

One to two times a year if your soil test shows organic matter at 2.5% or below. Topdressing will still benefit any lawn.

Do I need a soil test first?

It's the best place to start. Every new lawn treatment client gets one, and the results tell us whether low organic matter, compaction or pH is what's holding your lawn back.

Will topdressing help with weeds?

Indirectly. It builds a thicker, healthier lawn, and dense turf leaves weeds less room to start. For the weeds you already have, our lawn fertilization and weed control treatments do the heavy lifting.
