Yard Drainage Solutions & Catch Basin Installation

If your lawn turns into a pond every time it rains, you have plenty of company in Baton Rouge. Standing water in the landscape drowns grass roots, rots shrubs and leaves the lawn a mess for days. We install catch basins and complete yard drainage solutions that move water off your property. Landscape drainage is one of our most practical landscaping services, and it protects the bigger investments you have made in your lawn, landscape and home.

Why Yard Drainage Matters

Without proper drainage, a lawn and landscape cannot reach their potential. Too much water leads to fungal problems and dieback in lawns. In flower beds, waterlogged soil causes root rot in plants like boxwoods and a fast decline in many trees and shrubs. Fixing the drainage keeps your landscape safer and drier, and it lets everything you have planted actually grow.

French Drain or Catch Basin?

A French drain is a hidden underground system: a perforated pipe wrapped in a drainage sock and buried in gravel, with water seeping in from above. Over our years of installs, we have seen French drains clog over time, and once they are blocked they are extremely difficult to clear. That's why we usually recommend a catch basin instead.

Why We Often Recommend Catch Basins

A catch basin is a square opening, usually 9 or 12 inches across, set flush with the ground and connected to a pipe system. Surface water runs straight in and gets carried away. In our experience, catch basins are the more efficient, more cost-effective and more reliable choice in about 90% of cases.

Drain pipes of two sizes in Baton Rouge, LA

Pipe Size Matters More Than Basin Size

A lot of people assume a bigger basin drains faster. Going from a 9-inch to a 12-inch basin, or a 12-inch to an 18-inch, does not change much on its own. The pipe does. Most systems use 4-inch or 6-inch pipe, and a 6-inch system can handle nearly triple the water of a 4-inch system. That also means about three times as many downspouts can tie in without hurting performance, which makes 6-inch pipe a much better investment.

Gravity-Fed Systems, Not Pumps

Sump pumps feel like the obvious fix, but outdoors they cause headaches. They sit exposed to the weather, clog, fail and burn out, and they do nothing during a power outage, which is often exactly when you need them. Pumps caused enough trouble that we stopped installing them altogether. We build gravity-fed systems because they are simply more dependable.

Drainage Contractors Who Show You the Details

We have installed hundreds of drainage systems in lawns and flower beds since 2012. Every job starts on your property, because water does not follow a template.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call (225) 405-1816.

Which is better, a French drain or a catch basin?

In our experience, catch basins win in about 90% of cases. They take in surface water faster and are much easier to keep working. French drains still have their place, and we install them where they are the right fit.

Why does water stand in my landscape?

Usually it is a mix of heavy rain, low spots and soil that cannot soak water in fast enough. Compacted soil around newer construction homes is a common culprit. When our estimator visits, we will show you where the water is going and why.

Will core aeration fix my drainage problem?

Core aeration relieves compacted soil and opens pathways for water to move down into the root zone, which helps a lawn take in rain. It will not carry water away from a property that floods, though. That takes a drainage system.

Can you connect my downspouts?

Yes. Downspouts can tie into a drainage system, and a 6-inch pipe system can handle about three times as many downspouts as a 4-inch one without losing performance.

Do you install sump pumps?

No. Outdoor pumps clog, fail, burn out and stop working when the power goes out, so we stopped installing them. We build gravity-fed systems instead.
