Flower Bed Weed Control

You pulled it last weekend. It is back already. If that sounds like your flower beds, you are probably fighting nutsedge or torpedo grass, two of the toughest weeds in south Louisiana. Our flower bed weed control service goes after them with monthly treatments of selective herbicides, which is the only real way to beat weeds that regrow from underground. It is one of our specialty landscaping services, and it is the fix for beds that seem to grow weeds overnight.

Flower Bed Weed Control for Weeds That Won't Quit

Most bed weeds come out with a good tug and a fresh layer of mulch. These two do not. Both spread underground, both laugh at hand weeding, and both can take over a bed before you realize what is happening. They steal water and nutrients from your plants and crowd out the flowers you actually paid for.

Nutsedge Control

Nutsedge is a fast-growing weed that is light green and shiny, with triangular stems. It shrugs off the everyday weed killer most homeowners grab off the shelf, and it reproduces quickly through underground tubers that form dense clumps. Pull the top off and the tubers stay in the soil: two or three new plants can pop up within three days. If you have nutsedge in the grass too, our lawn fertilization and weed control treats it in the lawn.

Torpedo Grass, the Weed With Roots Like Torpedoes

Torpedo grass is a notorious invasive with sharp underground rhizomes shaped like little torpedoes, which is where the name comes from. It loves moist soil and can take over a flower bed before you notice. Its roots can run about 6 inches deep, so pulling on the stem simply does not get rid of it. A selective torpedo grass killer, applied consistently, is what keeps it in check.

Why These Weeds Love Louisiana

Our warm climate and frequent rain create the perfect breeding ground for both nutsedge and torpedo grass. Moist beds, long growing seasons and soil that rarely dries out give them everything they need. That is why one treatment is never enough, and why a monthly plan works.

How Our Monthly Treatments Work

  1. 1

We identify the nutsedge and torpedo grass in your beds

  2. 2

We apply a selective herbicide made specifically for these weeds

  3. 3

We come back every month to keep them under control and stop new outbreaks

Part of a Clean-Bed Plan

Weed control works best when the beds are already in good shape. If yours are overgrown, a one-time Bed Cleanup clears them out first. To keep them clean all year, Bed Maintenance adds two cleanups a year with weed treatments in between, and monthly flower bed weed control handles the nutsedge and torpedo grass that hand weeding cannot.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call (225) 405-1816.

What are nutsedge and torpedo grass?

Two aggressive weeds that spread underground. Nutsedge is shiny and light green with triangular stems and grows from tubers. Torpedo grass is an invasive grass with sharp, torpedo-shaped rhizomes that can run about 6 inches deep.

Why can't I just pull them?

Pulling only removes the top. Nutsedge regrows from tubers left in the soil, often two or three new plants within days, and torpedo grass rhizomes sit too deep to pull out.

Will the treatment hurt my flowers?

We use selective herbicides chosen for these specific weeds and apply them to target the weeds, not your plants. That is what makes it possible to treat inside a planted bed.

How often do you treat?

Monthly. These weeds come back from underground, so steady, repeated treatments are what wear them down and prevent new outbreaks.

Can this work alongside bed maintenance?

Yes, the two work together. Bed maintenance keeps the beds weeded, trimmed and tidy, and monthly weed control handles the nutsedge and torpedo grass that regular weeding cannot.
