Lawn Core Aeration

Hard ground, thin grass and water that sits on top instead of soaking in are all signs your soil is packed too tight. Lawn aeration (you may also hear it called aerification) fixes that by pulling thousands of small plugs of soil out of your lawn, opening a path for air, water and nutrients to reach the roots. It's one of our lawn care services that works on the soil itself, and south Louisiana lawns need it more than most.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration

  • Grass is thin or patchy
  • The soil feels unusually hard or compacted
  • Water puddles or runs off instead of soaking in
  • Mature trees are competing with the grass for nutrients
  • You want a thicker, healthier lawn and fertilizer alone isn't getting you there

How Our Lawn Aeration Service Works

Core aeration, also called mechanical aeration, uses a machine that removes small plugs, or cores, of soil across your lawn. That relieves compaction, gives grass roots more room to grow and lets air, water and nutrients move deeper into the root zone. The little plugs left behind on the surface break down within a week or two and return to the soil.

It's a simple idea with a big payoff. When you aerate your lawn, every treatment and every rain shower after that has an easier path to the roots.

Why Baton Rouge Lawns Get So Compacted

Southern Louisiana is known for compacted soil. Dense clay, heavy rain, foot traffic and mature trees all take a toll. New construction is the hardest case of all: the original topsoil gets disturbed, removed or mixed with subsoil, fill gets brought in, and heavy equipment packs the ground down before the lawn is ever installed. From the street, everything looks fine at first. Underneath, the roots have nowhere to go.

What Aeration Does for Your Lawn

  • Breaks up compacted soil for better drainage
  • Promotes thicker, more resilient grass
  • Reduces drought stress by helping the soil take in and hold water
  • Cuts down on fungal growth and bare spots
  • Enriches the soil naturally as the cores break down

Why We Don't Overseed

Here in Louisiana, our lawns are mostly warm-season grasses like St. Augustine, Centipede, Bermuda and Zoysia, which don't respond to overseeding the way cool-season grasses do. Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede technically can be grown from seed, but the process is finicky and labor-intensive. It takes careful preparation, frequent attention and watering as often as three times a day while the seed establishes, and even then the results can be inconsistent. St. Augustine is generally established with sod or plugs, not seed.

So instead of selling a service that often produces unpredictable results, we focus on improving the health of the warm-season grass you already have, through proper fertility, weed control and soil improvement. Healthy warm-season turf naturally spreads and fills thin areas during the growing season. When an area is too damaged to recover, sod or plugs are usually a more dependable answer than seed.

Aeration and Topdressing: Two Ways to Build Better Soil

Aeration relieves compaction, and lawn topdressing adds a thin layer of organic matter that improves the soil over time. Each one helps on its own, they complement each other, and they don't have to happen in a set order. We often suggest one or both after a soil test shows compaction, low organic matter or a pH problem, and we schedule them around your lawn and the season. It isn't an overnight fix, but it improves the soil your lawn will grow in for years.

When to Aerate Your Lawn

In south Louisiana, the best time to aerate is during the growing season, in spring and fall, when grass can recover quickly. Most lawns do well with aeration once or twice a year, and heavily compacted or high-traffic properties may benefit from it more often. Aeration doesn't replace feeding and weed control. It makes them work better, which is why it pairs so well with our 7 Step Annual Lawn Treatment Program.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question? Visit our FAQ page or call (225) 405-1816.

What is core aeration?

A professional lawn core aeration service removes small plugs of soil from your lawn to relieve compaction and let air, water and nutrients reach the roots.

Why don't you overseed after aerating?

Louisiana lawns are warm-season grasses that don't respond to overseeding the way cool-season lawns do. We focus on helping the grass you already have spread and fill in. Where an area is too damaged to recover, sod or plugs are usually more dependable than seed.

Does aerating my lawn help drainage?

It can. Compacted soil sheds water instead of absorbing it, and aeration opens it back up so water can soak in. If water is pooling because of how the landscape drains, our landscape drainage team can take a look.

Should I topdress at the same time?

If your soil is compacted or low in organic matter, it's a smart move. Aeration opens the soil, and topdressing works better material into those openings.

Is aeration good for new-construction lawns?

It's especially valuable there. Heavy equipment often compacts the soil before the lawn is installed, and aeration is how we start opening it back up.
